Emballageretur is now opening membership to producers and importers that sell products in packaging on the Danish market. Members gain access to Emballageretur’s extensive knowledge of collection, treatment and recycling of waste, so they can be well prepared to take over responsibility for packaging waste from 1 January 2025.
Emballageretur was initiated by Elretur, Denmark’s largest non-profit Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for the collection, treatment, reuse and recycling of electrical products.
Elretur’s extensive experience with waste management will benefit Emballageretur’s members from day one. Since 2005, Elretur has built up extensive knowledge of and experience with the processes needed to handle large waste volumes efficiently and to increase the recycling rate as much as possible.
“We have the entire business system in place and know most of the potential sources of error from the start. This is a major advantage for us and for our members, because we do not have to build the necessary experience and practical systems from scratch. We can, so to speak, simply press the button when the calendar reaches 1 January 2025. But before then, both we and all businesses covered by EPR have a great deal of preparatory work to do,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen, CEO of Elretur.
Membership of Emballageretur does not only solve a number of administrative and financial challenges for businesses. It also opens up attractive opportunities to show the outside world that the business acts responsibly towards the environment and supports the circular economy.
“As a member of Emballageretur, your business gains access to our environmental emblem, which shows customers, employees, partners and others that you are preparing for EPR and are working seriously to reduce environmental impact. A company’s green profile is becoming increasingly important when it comes to attracting customers, recruiting the right employees and building partnerships with attractive organisations. An environmental emblem from Emballageretur helps strengthen members’ green profile,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen.
As members, businesses do not only gain access to knowledge and guidance. They also have the opportunity to influence Emballageretur’s work.
“We are a member-driven organisation. This means that all our members have influence on our work. They do not just receive guidance and practical support with packaging. Businesses also become part of an organisation whose aim is to promote the circular economy – work they can help shape themselves,” explains Morten Harboe-Jepsen.
Because of its background, Emballageretur also has close partners among waste operators, both in Denmark and abroad.
A large number of Danish businesses sell their products abroad, where packaging rules also apply. Emballageretur’s members gain access to the organisation’s international platform, weee EUROPE, which helps them navigate EPR outside Denmark. In this way, Danish businesses contribute to the circular economy and environmental responsibility in foreign markets as well.

Emballageretur is a non-profit Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) that takes responsibility for packaging waste from the point it is collected from households until it is either recycled or disposed of in an environmentally sound way. Emballageretur offers to handle businesses’ EPR obligations for packaging when the EPR rules in this area take effect in 2025.
Businesses can already become members of Emballageretur. In the period leading up to 2025, Emballageretur will inform businesses about the future EPR rules, the consequences of the new requirements and how businesses can lower their costs by focusing on packaging with high reuse and recycling potential.
