Who we are

Non-profit, member-owned and organised around one purpose: your EPR obligations

Retur is not a company with shareholders. We are a non-profit organisation owned by our members and organised with one purpose: to make Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as efficient, correct and cost-effective as possible for the companies that need it.

We are Denmark’s largest family of Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) and operate Elretur, Batteriretur, Emballageretur, Fiskeriretur and Tekstilretur from one shared secretariat with specialised teams and shared systems.

How Retur is organised

Retur acts as the umbrella organisation for our Producer Responsibility Organisations. The structure is designed to ensure both shared economies of scale and close specialist insight into the companies and industries served by each individual scheme.

The organisation is built on three levels:

Retur — has a shared board and a secretariat that operates all schemes. This is where overall strategic and organisational decisions are made, and where shared resources, systems and networks are managed.

The Producer Responsibility Organisations — each have their own board and priorities. They specialise in their respective EPR areas and ensure that the schemes are operated with the right level of specialist expertise and proximity to the legislation in each area.

The sections — are where member democracy takes place in practice. This is where member companies meet, discuss developments and set the environmental fees for the coming year. The sections’ recommendations are reviewed and approved by the boards.

The secretariat: our day-to-day operations across schemes

Retur’s secretariat manages the day-to-day operations of all schemes and serves thousands of member companies across product categories.

Member service and guidance
Direct sparring with companies on EPR, reporting and legislation. We are accessible — not a call centre.

Reporting and data
We handle quantity reporting to the authorities on behalf of our members and ensure that data is correct, timely and well documented.

Authorities and systems
We actively participate in forums with Danish Producer Responsibility and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and bring that knowledge back. We operate and develop digital systems for reporting and administration.

Member democracy: you have a say

Retur is an association. And our member democracy takes place in the sections.

The sections are industry-specific groups within the individual schemes, where member companies meet and set the prices and priorities that affect them. The sections’ recommendations are reviewed by the boards — creating a direct line from the interests of the individual company to the decisions that shape the scheme.
