In October, thousands of companies will be facing a major task. This is when EPR for packaging enters into force, and Danish businesses will assume the practical, financial and legal responsibility for ensuring that the many tonnes of cardboard, plastic and other types of packaging waste generated each year are collected, sorted and recycled correctly and as effectively as possible.
The task will be handled on behalf of companies by the Producer Responsibility Organisation Emballageretur, which is built on 20 years of experience with managing producer responsibility. Emballageretur is now opening prequalification for its upcoming packaging tender.
“There are many tasks involved in preparing for the implementation of EPR for packaging. One of the most important will be finding the right operators to help us handle the large quantities of packaging waste that Emballageretur will collect on behalf of our member companies across Denmark,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen, CEO of Retur and Emballageretur.
Emballageretur’s tender includes tasks within both transport and treatment, including recycling.
“It is possible to bid for all elements or selected elements. We are now opening prequalification for our tender, and we encourage all interested companies to bid for the parts of the tender that may be relevant,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen.
It is estimated that a total of 1.1 million tonnes of packaging will be covered by producer responsibility, and that handling this will cost the approximately 7,000 affected companies DKK 2.35 billion a year.
“The purpose of producer responsibility is to motivate companies to use packaging that is easier to either reuse or recycle. As the figures also indicate, this is a major task that must be lifted by the affected companies both individually and collectively. The treatment of the packaging quantities, so that as much as possible is recycled, will be decisive in achieving the goal of producer responsibility. That is why we are also pleased to begin this work with prequalification for our tender,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen.
Prequalification for Emballageretur’s tender is now open. The tender includes tasks involving both transport and treatment, and it is possible to bid for all elements or selected elements. All interested companies are encouraged to bid for the parts of the tender that may be relevant to them.
The deadline for applying for prequalification is 27 February 2025.
