Which fishing gear is covered by EPR?

Fishing gear containing plastic may be covered by EPR - even when plastic is only part of the gear.

Start with the plastic content

EPR applies to fishing gear that contains plastic. There is no lower threshold for plastic content, so it is not decisive whether the gear is primarily made of plastic.

Plastic may be used in nets and lines, ropes, cords and twine, floats and sinkers, or as components in a composite construction. The first question is therefore whether the gear or gear part contains plastic.

The covered categories — and what they mean

Commercial fishing gear

Towed fishing gear used in commercial fishing and containing plastic — for example trawls, seines, dredges and Danish seines. This gear is handled through port allocation and may be linked to financial guarantee requirements.

Other fishing gear

Fishing gear containing plastic that is not commercial fishing gear. This includes gear for recreational fishing, aquaculture and other purposes. A take-back scheme is required for this category.

Gear parts

Parts for fishing gear may also be covered if they contain plastic — for example nets, ropes, lines, floats and similar components.

What is not covered?

Fishing gear without plastic is not covered by EPR. It is also important to distinguish between the producer or importer, who may have the EPR obligation, and the fisher or user, who is generally not subject to EPR.

If you are unsure whether a specific item of gear is covered, Fiskeriretur can help with an initial assessment. The final decision can be made by Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA) through a scoping decision.
