What does EPR for fishing gear containing plastic cost?

EPR for fishing gear with plastic consists of several types of costs. The costs depend on authority fees, quantities, gear type and the practical management.

What you pay for

When your company has Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for fishing gear containing plastic, the costs do not consist of one single amount. They include both fees payable to the authorities and a fee to the scheme that finances the collection, management and treatment of the gear when it becomes waste.

The fee to the scheme does not only depend on quantities. It is also affected by the characteristics of the gear — including durability, potential for reuse, repairability and recyclability. This means that two pieces of gear with the same weight will not necessarily have the same EPR cost.

How the costs are connected

Authority fees

You must pay a registration fee to Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA) of DKK 1,000 — or DKK 500 if you are already registered under another EPR area. In addition, you pay an administration fee to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, which is DKK 2.34/kg in 2025 and DKK 2.17/kg in 2026.

Contributions to collection and treatment

You must finance the collection, transport and treatment of the end-of-life fishing gear for which you are responsible. The costs depend, among other things, on whether the gear is commercial fishing gear or other fishing gear.

The properties of the gear affect the fee

The fee also depends on the properties of the gear. Durability, reusability, repairability and recyclability affect how the fee is set.

Eco-modulation - what are the gear types assessed on?

Producer Responsibility Organisations for fishing gear are required to eco-modulate the fees. This means that gear is assessed on factors such as durability, reusability, repairability and recyclability.

The purpose is to create a financial incentive to develop and choose gear that can remain in use for longer and be managed better when it becomes waste. Gear with a better environmental profile may therefore achieve a lower fee rate.

Financial guarantee applies to commercial fishing gear

If you produce commercial fishing gear, you must provide a financial guarantee once a year for the expected costs of managing the allocated quantities. The financial guarantee is provided to Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA).

This does not apply to all producers of fishing gear, but it is an important factor for companies with commercial fishing gear. As a member of Fiskeriretur, you can be covered by a shared solution where we apply for exemption from individual financial guarantee requirements on behalf of the members.

Fiskeriretur brings finances and scheme management together in one place

For many companies, the challenge is not only the cost itself, but also understanding which parts are paid to the authorities, which parts go towards management and treatment, and which parts depend on category and environmental profile.

As a member, you get a shared scheme solution where Fiskeriretur handles the practical scheme tasks on behalf of the members. For producers of commercial fishing gear, Fiskeriretur can also apply for exemption from individual financial guarantee requirements.
