Why choose a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO)?

EPR can be difficult to handle alone. For many companies, a PRO is the simplest way to handle EPR correctly, so your company does not have to build its own systems for collection, reporting, documentation and ongoing dialogue with the authorities.

What you avoid having to handle alone

Registration, reporting and documentation

The PRO provides guidance on registration in the producer register at Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA). After that, the PRO reports your quantities, material types and product categories to the authorities on your behalf and documents the tasks it performs.

Waste management with traceability

The PRO organises the collection, sorting and treatment of the products you have placed on the market when they become waste. This is done with traceability across the value chain - from collection to reuse, recycling or environmentally sound disposal. You receive documentation for the waste management handled by the PRO.

Guidance and updates

The PRO provides guidance on rules, deadlines and changes in legislation and helps with dialogue with Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA), municipalities and treatment facilities. You get one place to go when you need to handle EPR in practice.

When is a PRO required?

In some product areas, your company must be a member of a PRO in order to meet its EPR obligations. In other areas, you can in principle choose to handle EPR individually — but this requires your company to handle all practical and administrative tasks itself.

Membership of a PRO is mandatory for:

Single-use packaging

If your company has EPR obligations for single-use packaging, you must be registered with a PRO. Registration with the PRO must take place in connection with registration at Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA).

Portable batteries and LMT batteries

If you place portable batteries or batteries for light means of transport on the market, you must also be registered with an approved PRO. LMT batteries include, for example, batteries for e-bikes, e-scooters and similar light means of transport.

In other areas, you can choose a PRO voluntarily

For example, for electronics, reusable packaging, fishing gear and certain single-use plastic products, your company can choose between joining a PRO or handling EPR individually.

If you choose to handle it yourself, you must, among other things, establish or document collection solutions, enter into agreements with relevant treatment facilities, ensure traceability, handle reporting and be able to document to the authorities that the obligations have been fulfilled.

That is why most companies choose a PRO - even in areas where it is not a legal requirement.

You carry the responsibility - we help you fulfil it

A PRO does not take over your legal EPR responsibility. Your company remains responsible to the authorities, and you must ensure that the data and information used as the basis for reporting is correct.

What a PRO does is handle a number of practical and administrative tasks on your behalf, so the obligations can be fulfilled correctly and efficiently in practice.

Retur handles the task. Your company carries the responsibility.

Why choose Retur’s PROs?

Retur covers EPR for electronics, batteries, packaging, fishing gear and textiles. This means that companies with several EPR obligations can bring them together in one place - with one point of contact and more coherent handling.

Retur is non-profit and member-owned. Our role is not to generate profit for external owners, but to manage Extended Producer Responsibility efficiently, responsibly and for the benefit of the companies we work for.

We do not only handle administration. We also manage the practical aspects of Extended Producer Responsibility: collection, treatment, traceability, documentation and the development of solutions that strengthen reuse and recycling.

As a member, you get access to knowledge, guidance and tools that help you stay ahead of rules, deadlines and new requirements. If you sell in several countries, we can help guide you through the Nordic and European EPR system via Nordic PRO Solutions and Pronexa.
