If your company is left with packaging waste from day-to-day operations, you can apply for financial compensation for the waste management costs. Here you get an overview of who can apply, what you can apply for, and how the scheme works in practice.
Business compensation for packaging waste is a scheme that allows waste-producing companies to apply for financial compensation for the standardised costs they have incurred for collecting and handling packaging waste from their own day-to-day operations.
Compensation for business packaging waste is intended to ensure that companies left with packaging waste in their own operations do not bear the waste management costs alone. The logic is the same as in the rest of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): the company that places the packaging on the market should pay - not the company left with the waste.
The compensation is financed by the companies that have EPR for the packaging and, in practice, administered by the Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs). Compensation to be applied for via Emballageretur is applied for digitally via affaldsanmodning.dk.
The waste-producing company - meaning the company where the packaging actually becomes waste - can apply for compensation. This will typically be companies that receive packaged deliveries and are left with the packaging waste themselves.
Your waste collector can also apply on behalf of the company if a power of attorney has been created via affaldsanmodning.dk. The payment can be made to you or to the collector, depending on the agreement.
The request is sent to the PRO that has been assigned payment responsibility in the municipality where your company is registered. The assignment is based on your P number.
The request is submitted digitally via affaldsanmodning.dk using MitID Erhverv. You must state the waste fraction and quantities, provide information about the waste collector and attach documentation - for example invoices, weighbridge tickets or contractual documentation.
Compensation can be applied for business packaging waste made of:
• cardboard
• paper
• plastic
• metal
• glass
• food and beverage cartons
• wood
• packaging correctly sorted as residual waste
The waste must originate from your company’s own operations and must be correctly sorted according to the applicable rules.
Compensation is not granted for waste from your own take-back scheme, waste handled through municipal collection or drop-off schemes, waste that is not packaging, or hazardous waste.
If you have established your own take-back scheme for the packaging, you cannot apply for payment for the collection, transport and treatment of those quantities.

Affaldsanmodning.dk is the digital system that Emballageretur and ERP Denmark have jointly developed to handle compensation requests. This means that the PROs themselves have built and operate the system - it is not an authority platform.
You log in with MitID Erhverv, and the system is designed so that both companies and waste collectors can create and manage requests.
The compensation is not calculated based on your actual costs, but on standardised key figures set by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and updated once a year or when needed. The key figures reflect average market prices for collection, transport and treatment.
This means that your full actual costs may not necessarily be covered. You receive standardised compensation based on market levels.
