What does EPR for electronics involve?

If your company is covered by EPR for electronics, you must meet requirements for registration, reporting, financing, labelling and documented waste management. Here you get an overview of what this requires from your company - and where Elretur helps you in practice.

EPR is both a data task and a waste management task

Extended Producer Responsibility for electronics requires companies to register with Dansk Producentansvar (DPA) no later than 14 days before the equipment is placed on the market. Companies must also report and document the quantities placed on the market on an ongoing basis, and finance the collection and environmentally responsible treatment of end-of-life electronics.

When your company has EPR obligations for electronics, you need to keep track of the products you place on the market, the categories they belong to and the quantities that must be reported.

You must also finance the management of electronic waste and ensure that the equipment is marked and can enter the correct collection schemes.

Elretur handles the collective waste obligations on behalf of its members and reports to Danish Producer Responsibility based on the data you provide. Your company remains responsible for ensuring that data and documentation are correct.

Your three main obligations

1

Registration

You must register with Danish Producer Responsibility (DPA) no later than 14 days before you place electrical and electronic equipment on the market in Denmark.

2

Reporting

You must report quantities placed on the market to Elretur according to the deadlines that apply to your membership and be able to document the basis for the figures.

3

Financing, marking and information

You must finance the collection and treatment of electronic waste and ensure correct marking and information about separate collection.

What does registration require?

Registration with Danish Producer Responsibility is a prerequisite for your company to legally market electrical and electronic equipment in Denmark.

You register your company yourself via producentansvar.dk. Before registering, you should among other things have an overview of your company details, which equipment categories you place on the market, whether the equipment is sold to households or businesses, and whether you want to be affiliated with a PRO.

What does reporting require?

As a member, you report quantities placed on the market to Elretur in Returportalen according to the deadlines Elretur announces for the relevant reporting year.

The reporting forms the basis for environmental fees and for Elretur's further reporting to Danish Producer Responsibility. You must report quantities in kilos, broken down by the relevant equipment categories and, where relevant, by equipment for households and businesses. Household and business relate to where the product becomes waste: with a citizen or with a company.

Elretur also reports collected and treated quantities on behalf of its members based on the operational waste management that Elretur organises.

Documentation and statement

Your data must be documented. Companies with annual turnover below DKK 1 million must generally submit a management statement. Companies with annual turnover above DKK 1 million must generally have an auditor's statement. The specific deadlines are announced in Returportalen and the annual reporting guide.

Information and marking

Your company also has obligations regarding marking and information to end users. This includes marking with the symbol for separate collection - the crossed-out wheeled bin - and information that electronics must not be disposed of as ordinary waste.

The requirements help ensure that the equipment ends up in the correct collection schemes.

Elretur helps with reporting and waste management

For many companies, EPR becomes tangible when product categories, quantities and documentation need to work together in practice.

As a member, you report data to Elretur. Elretur uses the data for the further authority reporting and handles the collective waste obligations on behalf of its members.
